Understanding the Different Types of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Have you been told that you need gynecological surgery? While having surgery is rarely at the top of anyone’s bucket list, the good news is that advances in medical technology mean a growing number of gynecological treatments and procedures can be performed with minimally invasive surgery.
At Yakov Levy MD PC in Midtown East, Manhattan, and Forest Hills, Queens, New York, our team is committed to helping you get the treatment you need so you can get back to living your life. That’s why board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Yakov Levy offers several different types of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries.
Why might I need minimally invasive surgery?
There are many reasons we might recommend minimally invasive surgery. For example, if Dr. Levy suspects you may be suffering from endometriosis, a painful condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside your womb, he may recommend minimally invasive surgery to diagnose and treat your condition.
Other reasons you may need minimally invasive surgery include issues such as:
- Tubal ligation
- Removing fibroids, which are noncancerous tumors
- Removing ovarian cysts
- Resolving ectopic pregnancy
- Fixing structural abnormalities
- Addressing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
- Performing a hysterectomy
Regardless of your condition, Dr. Levy and the team first discuss all options with you, answering any questions or concerns you have. In some cases, Dr. Levy may recommend trying nonsurgical treatments, such as hormonal birth control, before suggesting a surgical solution.
What are the different types of minimally invasive surgery?
Women today have a range of minimally invasive surgeries available to help correct gynecological issues. Years ago, even simple procedures like having your tubes tied required days or even weeks of recovery time.
Minimally invasive surgery allows your provider to use advanced technology and special tools to make smaller incisions and work in the tiny spaces of your pelvis with better precision. At Yakov Levy MD PC, our team performs several types of minimally invasive surgeries.
Robotic-assisted surgery
During robotic-assisted surgery, Dr. Levy inserts a tiny camera through a small incision at the surgical area. The camera sends a high-definition, 3D image of the area to an external monitor.
Using computer-assisted technology and specialized surgical instruments, Dr. Levy can perform different surgical procedures with better control, precision, and range of motion than is possible with traditional surgery.
Despite the name, the robot is never in charge and never makes decisions or performs incisions. The robotic arms only respond to Dr. Levy’s finger and hand movements, giving him better precision in a tight space than the human hand is capable of.
Laparoscopic surgery
Gynecological laparoscopy is a type of minimally invasive surgery Dr. Levy uses to diagnose and treat many women’s health conditions. Instead of the large, open incisions called for by traditional surgery, Dr. Levy uses a small tube called a laparoscope fitted with a powerful camera to light and examine your reproductive organs.
Laparoscopy allows Dr. Levy to safely and effectively see what’s causing your symptoms and arrive at a more accurate diagnosis. He can also treat different conditions and perform a variety of procedures using laparoscopic surgical methods.
Vaginal surgery
While vaginal surgery isn’t as minimally invasive as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted surgery, it is a less invasive approach than traditional open surgery. During this type of surgery, Dr. Levy makes a small incision or incisions through the wall of your vagina to complete different surgical procedures.
Why choose minimally invasive surgery over traditional methods?
Dr. Levy recommends minimally invasive surgery when possible because of the many benefits these procedures provide. One of the biggest benefits is the faster recovery time these procedures offer.
Depending on the type of surgery you have, other benefits of minimally invasive surgery include:
- The use of smaller incisions
- Shorter hospital stay (when required)
- Lower risk of infection
- Reduced blood loss risk
- Minimal scarring
- Better clinical outcomes
Additionally, robotic-assisted surgery provides Dr. Levy enhanced control and flexibility and can perform even complex or delicate procedures with more precision than traditional surgical methods.
